Unrealistic expectations of others leading to disappointment in an idea or person. It is rather unusual that there should be so many for Vega.

It may be a case of Venus overdose, where Vega can be become like negative Taurus. When there is too much gaudiness, make-up or plastic surgery one can look rather grotesque. Venus on Vega can tend towards the ostentatious. These subjects are the ones most likely to drive flashy cars, carry expensive designer handbags or have a trophy spouse.

Robert Kennedy ; American politician and civil rights activist who like his President brother was assassinated and also tended towards infidelity. Bjork ; Elfin Icelandic singer-songwriter known for her emotional, raw and eccentric vocal delivery. She was stalked by an obsessive fan who sent her a letter bomb and then killed himself.

Mostly it is much like Mercury on Vega, musical and vocal talent and the ability to charm, a great storyteller, but the ability to tell great lies also. Harold Shipman ; British doctor and the most prolific serial killer in history with plus victims. All were his patients. You can see great achievement here without any negative manifestations. Mars is aspirational here, with also the talent to back it up. These subjects may start off as an apprentice to someone they admire, but then become more famous than their hero.

Katherine Hepburn ; American actress known for her fearless persona and pushy independence. Kelly Osbourne ; British fashion designer and singer, daughter of rockstar Ozzy. The claw stars also seem to have the same success as Vega above, although Sulaphat can be a little more ruthless in its pursuit for fame, being quick to seize any opportunities that put them under the media spotlight.

Conversely they may attract that from others also because they feel they need to buy their lovers affection. When analyzing a Grand Trine in a specific horoscope it is necessary to pay special attention to what signs contain the given configuration usually they are signs of one element — this will indicate the likely manifestation of the Grand Trine.

Lore of Astrology: Capricorn Sun Sign 'Study Element' - Earthlore Explorations

If one of the three points of a Grand Trine is in opposition to a planet, it gives the Grand Trine an opportunity to manifest more brightly. In such configurations the most important point of the Grand Trine is the point that has the opposition aspect; and the point opposing it reveals unrealized aspirations, the fateful area of a horoscope. This configuration is called the Kite see below. This is a quincunx-sextile-quincunx. It features a crisis of — and a need for — perspective, in which the energies of the two sextiled planets find difficulty integrating with that of the apex, quincunxed planet.

This dichotomy is not directly a conflict, rather a bewilderingly dualistic, seemingly irresolvable and compromising situation. It is a secret to be decoded, an intense dilemma, or a visitation from the Unknown. Allowing things to happen rather than seeking to steer them is what is called for here: yet, underneath, there is a new kind of adepthood which brings in a new form of control without holding on, if we can see it.

Sun-Mercury and Mars-Pluto are sextile one another. There can be much uncertainty with the quincunx aspects, which can certainly stimulate restlessness and a vague feeling that the native is missing something undefinable. With the quincunx, there is often a sense that one thing has to be given up in order to gain in the other area, that there are always difficult choices to make.

The focal point in this case, Jupiter will be an area where big life lessons occur. The yod can be accentuated when an opposition is thrown in, with two semisextile aspects too. The opposition forces the issue, and the apex planet then becomes very critical: what it represents needs to be consciously worked, owned, and integrated. A configuration of intense aspects, formed by four squares. A special case of the Grand Square is the Grand Cross. Grand Square — the most intense quadrangular configuration.

It encloses the person in a framework of severe constraints, which are perceived as pressing.

Astrology and the Star of David- A Perfect 7 & 12 Fit

The Grand Square gives a lot of energy which demands to be used, internal dynamism, insistence, force. Those with a Grand Square in the natal chart crystallize much very early. These are very dynamic people, but they manifest inflexibly in relating to the world. This is shown most rigidly in a Grand Square with two internal oppositions see the Grand Cross. A more moderate form is the Grand Square without an internal cross.

  7. In this case there are no rigid tensions between the poles, there is less dynamism, and more flexibility. In general, it is not necessary to consider the Grand Square as a destructive configuration; on the contrary, it is a very stable pattern producing results through effort. A configuration of intense aspects, formed by four points of a horoscope which occur as pairs of oppositions connected by squares. Essentially, this aspect pattern is four interlocking squares. This Grand Cross is somewhat wide in orb. Life can be a series of challenges and crises for the native with a Grand Cross.

Obstacles can come from within attitudes and without external circumstances. Rarely will a person with this combination choose the path of least resistance. They tend to seek out challenges.

What Your Baby's Sign Says About Her

Globa cites the Grand Cross as the most clearly operating configuration which symbolically corresponds to the element of Fire. Such people are very confident in their correctness and do not turn aside, but concede only under great pressure, and then only for a while. McEvers suggest that when the Grand Cross is present in the natal chart, the native is capable of surprising efforts and vigorous activity.

The direction of these efforts and actions depends on the cross of qualities and houses in which the points of the Grand Cross are located. The cardinal cross always indicates speed of action, the fixed cross strongly pronounced resoluteness when acting, while the mutable cross in many respects depends on the actions and reactions of other people. Acker remark that any attempt to solve a problem associated with one planet of the Grand Cross burdens the other planets connected in the configuration with problems.

The native is thus compelled to hasten from one crisis situation to another, unable to concentrate on any one situation for long enough to truly find a constructive resolution. If all the points of a Grand Cross are in one cross of qualities or cross of houses qualities, the problems of this cross will dominate the life of the native. Working with the planet of a Grand Cross which has the greatest number of harmonious aspects to planets not involved in the Grand Cross will enable the person to redirect energy for easier advancement.

Podvodnyj states that it is better to treat the Grand Cross as a balance of oppositions, not concentrating efforts on one particular planet or horoscope house as a specific objective, but carefully tracing a rhythm of destiny, like balancing on the crest of a wave. People with a Grand Cross in the natal horoscope have protection, but too high to conjecture a direct attribution. The configuration of aspects formed when points of a chart form a Grand Trine, and two of them sextile a fourth point or points.

January 3 Zodiac is Capricorn - Full Horoscope Personality

One may find remains of the claws of Cancer, the Crab, and at least one other sign, Aries, is identifiable because the caption is preserved even though the picture is gone. Even less remains in Sussiya. This is a mysterious place, a large Jewish town high in the Judean hills south of Hebron on the way to Beersheba. It is a town without a name and without a history—we use the Arabic name for the place for lack of an alternative—but it was a big place and it lasted a long time.

Very odd. The synagogue building, large and well built, also lasted a long time, and that longevity was the undoing of its mosaic floor. But there was a zodiac wheel here; a piece of the outer arc of the wheel is still in place. And we know the building was a synagogue because at least two elements we recognize from other places, the candelabra and the Ark, are still quite recognizable.

The survival of a fragment of the righteous ancestors panel is even more unexpected. The sussiya building was identified as a synagogue because the so-called synagogue panel of the mosaic was still quite visible, containing the Ark flanked by two candelabra. The well-built synagogue at Sussiya lasted for a long time, which was ultimately the downfall of some of its mosaics. As tastes changed, new mosaic floors were paved over the old one. Still, there are glimpses of the traditional elements, such as the inner circle now filled with a rosette, not Helios and a portion of the outer arc of the zodiac wheel visible a few feet below the inner circle.

We have nearly reached the end of our survey. One more site is left, and it is so obscure that only the smallest fraction of the synagogue mosaic remains. The area was a construction site in the Druze village of Usifiyya, east of Haifa on Mt. The last example of a synagogue zodiac mosaic consists of only a few fragments. This corner from the square panel shows the smiling face of the one of the seasons in the corner, as well as the edges of two zodiac segments, one of which can be identified as Cancer the other is unclear.

What have we found? We have found seven places in Israel where Jews put zodiac wheels, Helios, the four seasons, a panel of synagogue objects, and sometimes remembrance of righteous ancestors in mosaic on the floor of their synagogues. For the record, we have never found a zodiac in a Jewish context outside of Israel, and every zodiac found in Israel was in a synagogue. That fact tells us what we already knew: that these zodiacs were certainly not just decorations or pretty pictures. Nor were they attempts at astrology predicting the future or astronomy.

The Ark, candelabrum, shofar, etc. And the inscriptions on the zodiacs themselves were invariably in Hebrew, even if the common languages of the day, Aramaic or Greek were added. That is, the zodiacs were important and meant something to the people who made them. The question is: What? It is time to suggest some conclusions. The evidence indicates that we are in the presence of a mystical Hellenistic-Byzantine Jewish tradition, a tradition that Talmudic Judaism either ignored or suppressed, 29 a tradition we would not know anything about for it left no literature were it not for the discovery of this artwork, these symbols.

We need to learn how to read them. Historically, the mosaics were made at a time when what is sometimes called normative, or Talmudic, Judaism—the Judaism of the rabbis—was just developing.

    Navigation menu

And it was going a different way. God is pleased when man obeys and angry when he disobeys. This is the religion of the Hebrew Bible, and it is what normative Judaism became in the Talmud, the Middle Ages and, for the most part, up to our own time. But there was, and still is, a different kind of religion, much older than the Judaism we have just described.

We can call it vertical. Men always knew that their life depended on higher powers. First and most obvious, life depended on nature—on seed and growth, rain, sun, moon, land, wind and fire. That was natural religion; it was what primitive man did. It was only a short step from there to making each of these elements into a god. Ancient man thus prayed to rain and sacrificed to earth, worshiped the moon and adored the sun.

Interested in Biblical art? Not a BAS Library member yet? Sign up today. The cosmos was chaotic at first. The gods were busy having arguments and orgies with each other. In between the arguments they could torture and abuse men, and seduce women as they liked. But nature became orderly as the Greeks developed science—biology, astronomy and physics—and tamed the cosmos. They defined the forces influencing other forces; wind influences clouds, clouds influence rain, rain influences earth, and earth influences men. Thus the ladder of cosmic power was taking shape.

On this issue there is bad news and good news. The bad news is that the regular cycle of nature was pretty grim, not to mention completely predestined. There was no good and no evil—no value—which is why the Jews never bought into it. The good news is that the cosmos was also consoling. Nature was no longer random or dependent on the whim of the gods. Indeed, the regularity of the cycle of growth and death and rebirth in nature did give hope for immortality. And that, we suggest, is what they were doing by walking into the synagogue. We see the worshipers climbing the mystical ladder from the mundane and transient things down here at the entrance—who made the floor, when, and how much it cost—to a union with God at His holy Ark up there at the far end.

The first step was through our righteous ancestors. Their good deeds atone for our sins. But the vertical path of Jewish mysticism is beyond luck, beyond the stars. It is beyond even the strongest and most fearful of all natural powers, the sun. The charioteer is God, 36 in control of the four horses, over and above the stars and the constellations, that is, over fate and destiny. This is the God who rules over the moon and the seasons, the rain, the land and the elements.

Four elements like the four horses: earth, air, fire and water. This is the God who has graciously made a covenant and given Torah to His people Israel, whose sins are atoned for by the righteousness of their ancestors. We have come through our stages of ascent. Yet the door is always closed. God, inside, is still a mystery. But our long mystical journey to salvation is almost over. The incense shovel was a universally recognized Jewish symbol in the Byzantine era. It disappeared from the Jewish iconographic lexicon because the Jews stopped using incense when the Christians started.

The Aramaic inscription at the front door was damaged. The exact year is missing. The reference is probably to the emperor Justin I adopted uncle and immediate predecessor of Justinian the Great who ruled from C. It is of course possible that the building was older than the mosaic floor. It was the earthquake that finally destroyed Petra.

We have not entered into a discussion of the artistic merits of this work of art. Thus the new JPS Tanakh. In the Pseudo-Jonathan Targum to Lev. From a Geniza fragment of Midrash Deut. The matter is discussed in BT Shabbat , a At Beth Alpha the signs and the seasons both progress counter-clockwise, although they are misaligned. The Hammat Tiberias zodiac shows both signs and seasons also rotating counter-clockwise, and in correct alignment with each other. That position was argued by Prof. Avi-Yonah, among many others, and by the excavator of Hammat Tiberias.

The cataloging of all of these finds and the interpretation of what they might mean constitute the magnum opus of Erwin Goodenough , Professor of Religion at Yale and one of the greatest scholars of religion America ever produced. Goodenough, Jewish Symbols in the Greco-Roman Period , New York: Pantheon, , form the core text for the study of this subject, Everyone who has subsequently dealt with the subject is in his debt. The book has been re-issued in a 1-volume paperback, abridged and edited by Jacob Neusner Princeton: Bollingen Series , Dothan, op cit.

See endnote 6, above. We are amazed to discover that later generations built a wall right through the middle of the zodiac! The text is copied from I Chron. There are, of course, many groups of 12 in the Bible and throughout ancient literature: 12 sons of Jacob, 12 tribes of Israel, 12 disciples of Jesus, 12 signs of the zodiac, 12 months of the year, etc. The spiritual progression which we discuss requires exactly the opposite course. Josephus knew it as Nearah Antiquities. Lagrange in , and published by Prof. Sukenik in his book on Beth Alpha see endnote 1, above But it was always used for the Ram in the zodiac.

But that fragment is not to be found on the site any more. The iconoclastic movement in Judaism and Christianity was certainly in influenced by the uncompromising iconoclasm of militant Islam. But the trend in Judaism may have been a parallel rather than a dependent development. The remains of site, identified as ancient Huseifa, were excavated in and published the following year by Prof. Michael Avi-Yonah and M. The zodiac fragment is in the collection of the Hebrew University, Jerusalem.

Only the works of Philo and Josephus, together with some mystical apocalypses, survive as the literature from the Hellenistic Jewish world. They survive because of the Christians, who preserved them, not the Jews, who ignored them. There is no other mystical literature from the period of the mosaic making which might help us understand what the mosaic makers meant to say.

This formulation, from Goodenough q. The Jews were not much interested in immortality, but everybody else was! There are any number of examples of pious Jews venerating the tombs of saints and forefathers. Carmel, or indeed to a cemetery where someone of special interest to one or another Hassidic group is buried provides a fascinating glimpse into a Judaism which we of the liberated western world did not know still existed. The origin and symbolism of the Divine quadriga and its connection to merkava mysticism are discussed in a monograph by James Russell in the Jewish Studies Quarterly , vol.

We recall that in the Zippori zodiac the quadriga is driven by the sun itself, without the figure of a man. Compare Is. Some ancient synagogues, as in Beth-Shean, show only the synagogue panel without any of the other elements. I was sorry to see that he had passed away two years ago.

Great article…will anyone be conducting future research about what the zodiacs meant to the Jewish people? Monotheistic Judaism evolved out of a polytheistic culture. Then, as the religion became more patriarchal, the goddess figure was minimized and eventually discarded. BTW, this also happened in Islam but at a much faster and more deliberate pace.

When Mohammad decided to start a new religion, he took his basis from Monotheistic Judaism and selected one of the gods, Allah, from the pantheon of polytheistic Arabian culture. Judaism has many many many ideas in it that can be seen or perceived by someone unfamiliar with Judaism in one way even though it is not that way. Jews celebrate the new moon — surprise. Jews celebrate on the full moon. Jews celebrate in the Spring. Jews celebrate the first fruits of the harvest season.

The Torah and Psalms is full of celebration of this world and nature and all that is in it. The flimsy straw theoretical edifice constructed by this author is ridiculous. As has been said in these comments, astrology was part of the Jewish cosmology — at least since the Second Temple, if not earlier.

Why does the church refuse to acknowledge that The Queen in Gold of Ophir in Psalm is an actual historical figure? There is a stronger case outlined in The Bible to prove her actual historical existence than there is to disprove it. The church claims this Queen represents and symbolizes the bride of christ, the church. How can the church continue to dispute this and ignore these passages? Approaching scripture with preconceived ideas and notions can lead to unsubstantiated assumptions and inaccurate conclusions. Beware of false teachers with large ministries. Dont you know that God created the Zodiac r8ght from the beginning this is why it is shown in ancient hebrew findings.

Its all about the gospel story of a virgin giving birth to a son that would one day rule the world. So its not pagan but goes back further when God created all the stars. What is astonishing at [two of the best-preserved synagogue mosaics] is the large centerpiece, depicting the wheel of the zodiac, a blatantly Hellenistic-Roman device. It is populated with human figures, seemingly in defiance of the Second Commandment. Several of the twelve signs of the zodiac are human, with two in [the synagogue at] Hammat Tiberias—Libra and Aquarius—fully naked.

But the real surprise lies at the center of the wheel. Here, in the very heart of the synagogues, is a representation of Helios, the Greek sun god, in the form of a charioteer, whip in hand, riding his four-horse quadriga across the sky. What is the image doing here? An interesting series of comments; to begin with, the modern astrology of newspapers is very different form to that of the Magi, for example, who were astrologers, not kings. Their knowledge of the stars was on a priestly scale, since they were among the most knowledgable in this field. This produces the natural process called precession [sometimes called precession of the equinoxes].

The great year lasts about yrs, and is used as the outer circle of the zodiac. The constellations appear in reversed order [retrograde motion] in the order shown in the twelve sections of what is essentially a star map. Each section lasts about years. The zodiac is not satanic, it is not pagan, it is just a picture of what happens naturally to our planet. The names of the constellations change on a language basis, but all have similar meanings. The people who wrote the Bible did not know that Earth was a planet orbiting the Sun. They thought that the Earth was flat, and that the Sun orbits the Earth, just as the Catholic Church did for centuries.

In case you are wondering, I have been a Christian for over forty-five years.
